	Josefin Tingvall är född 1993, Arvika, Sverige, och bor och arbetar sedan 2019 i Göteborg. Hon tog sin masterexamen i Fine Art med inriktning på textilkonst 2017 från Konstfack i Stockholm. Tingvall har en examen i hantverk och design från Linköpings universitet, en masterexamen i Fri Konst från Hdk-Valand, Göteborgs Universitet och har studerat som gäststudent vid Kungliga Konsthögskolan i Stockholm.

Hennes praktik är projektbaserad och förankrad i en poetisk och materiell undersökning av materialens dynamik, manipulation och gränser. Tingvall arbetar mellan tekniker såsom vävning, broderi, experimentell färgning och visuell kodning, och brukar utveckla, sammanfoga och re-kontextualisera hantverk som en navigator och utforskande verktyg i sina projekt. Hon utforskar teman som miljö, skörhet och förändring, och människans roll i en mer än mänsklig värld genom den samtida textilen. I sina senaste projekt blandar hon bildvävning med byggstenarna i 3D-material, vilket kombinerar datorspelsmiljöer med hantverk. Ett återkommande tema är landskapet och den återbesökta platsen; en metafor för ständigt förvandling och av hantverk som handlingar och sammanflätningar mellan olika viljor och närvaros. De senaste separat utställningarna inkluderar Galleri Majnabbe (2025); Ahlbergshallen, Östersund (2023); Staffanstorps konsthall, (2023); Galleri KC, Göteborg, (2022); Luleå konsthall (2019). Tingvalls tidigare samlingsutställningar inkluderar Most Valuable craft on earth, Not Quite, Fengersfors (2024) Spånadslin, Slöjdgalleriet, Linköping (2022); Glokala Sammantrasslingar, Stationen, Svenshögen (2021); Connections, Gallery Noorus, Tartu, Estonia (2019).
Tingvall är mottagare av Wettergrens Stiftelse kulturstipendium (2021) och var finalist i Ung Svensk Form 2016. Hon har deltagit i residensen Air Green, Norwegian Textile Artists (2022); IASPIS, Konstnärsnämnden Stockholm, april – september (2020); Luleå ateljéstipendium (2018).

Vävda världar 

 
– reflektion från ateljén


Jag låser upp dörren till ateljén och går bort till min plats, tar trådsaxen i ett snöre runt halsen, och hänger en böjd gaffel i tröjans halslinning. Från kontorsstolen kan jag glida fram och tillbaka längs den 2,5 meter långa vävram jag arbetar på just nu. Jag väver något att stå på. Runt mig ligger högar av garn i olika kombinationer av grönt och brunt. Ett slags sammelsurium av marken under fötterna i en obestämd skog, under lågvuxna växter, grässtrån och bös. En bottenplatta.

I mitt arbete undersöker jag virtuella material och platsbyggande genom väv. Jag utgår från PBS (physically based rendering), en teknik som används för att skapa fotorealistiska digitala miljöer. Genom fotografier av verkliga material, objekt och växter byggs digitala ytor upp av texturlager som simulerar exempelvis glans, höjd och andra fysiska egenskaper. Det är självklart inte tänkt att varje kvalitet i dessa digitala världar ska vävas. Men likheten mellan pixlar och vävens upplösning har fört mig hit och nu sitter jag här; barkens höjd, lövens former och grenarnas konturer tar plats i ett handskande mellan digitala system och hantverk. I väven rör jag vid varje pixel. Med deadstock-garn pusslar och skarvar jag, i ett slags världsbyggande där den fotorealistiska illusionen får ge vika för material tillgång och tolkningar. För varje ny väv samlas 3D-materialens systematik i ateljén runt omkring mig.

Under arbetet genomförs även ett residens vid Kunstkvarteret Lofoten med stöd av Västra Götalandsregionen. De första skisserna och projektutvecklingen ägde rum på Rejmyre Art Lab 2025.

	Josefin Tingvall was born in 1993, Arvika, Sweden, and since 2019 lives and works in Gothenburg. She obtained her master’s degree in Fine Art focusing on textile art in 2017 from Konstfack in Stockholm. Tingvall holds a degree in craft and design from Linköping University, a Master's in Fine Arts from Gothenburg University, and has studied as a visiting student at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm.Her practice is project-based and rooted in a poetic and material investigation of the dynamics, manipulation and boundaries of materials. Tingvall works between techniques such as weaving, embroidery, experimental dyeing and visual coding, and tends to develop, merge and re-contextualize craft as a navigator and exploratory tool in her projects. She explores themes such as environment, fragility and change, and the role of humans in a more than human world through contemporary textiles. In her latest projects, she mixes tapestry weaving with the building blocks of 3D materials which combines computer game environments with crafts. A recurring theme is the landscape and the revisited place; a metaphor for constant transformation and of crafts as actions and intertwinings between different wills and presences.Recent solo exhibitions include Galleri Majnabbe (2025); Ahlbergshallen, Östersund (2023); Staffanstorp Konsthall, (2023); Galleri KC, Göteborg, (2022); Luleå Konsthall (2019) Tingvall’s past group exhibitions include Most Valuable craft on earth, Not Quite, Fengersfors (2024) Spånadslin, Slöjdgalleriet, Linköping (2022); Glokala Sammantrasslingar, Stationen, Svenshögen (2021); Connections, Gallery Noorus, Tartu, Estonia (2019).Tingvall is a recipient of Wettergrens Stiftelse Culture grant (2021) and was a finalist of Young Swedish form 2016. She has participated in the residences of Air Green, Norwegian Textile Artists (2022); IASPIS, Konstnärsnämnden Stockholm, april – september (2020); Luleå Ateljéstipendium (2018).

	Woven Worlds 
- reflection from the studio
I unlock the door to the studio and walk over to my workstation. I hang the thread scissors with a cord around my neck and tuck a bent fork into the neckline of my sweater. From my office chair, I can glide back and forth along the 2.5-metre weaving frame I’m currently working on. I’m weaving something to stand on. Around me lie piles of yarn in different combinations of green and brown. A kind of jumble of the ground beneath feets in an undefined forest, beneath low-growing plants, blades of grass and other bits of undergrowth. A base layer.

In my work, I explore virtual materials and the construction of virtual places through weaving. I draw on PBS (physically based rendering), a technique used to create photorealistic digital environments. Through photographs of real materials, objects and plants, digital surfaces are built up from layers of textures that simulate gloss, height and other physical properties. Of course, these digital worlds are not intended to be woven in all their qualities. But the similarity between pixels and the resolution of a woven surface has brought me here, and now I find myself sitting with the height of bark, the shapes of leaves and the contours of branches through an interplay between digital systems and craft. In the weave, I touch every pixel. Working with deadstock yarn, I piece things together and join fragments, engaging in a kind of world-building in which the photorealistic illusion gives way to material availability and interpretation. With each new tapestry, the systematic logic of 3D materials accumulates around me in the studio.
